Recovery Coaching is quickly proving itself to be an incredibly impactful way of supporting individuals on their recovery journeys. Through real-world tools, human connection, and participant-centred approaches, Recovery Coaches are changing lives, strengthening communities, and filling critical gaps in recovery-oriented systems of care.

At Recovery Coach Academy Canada (RCAC), we are proud to offer a training pathway that not only equips individuals with the skills they need but transforms them into compassionate, capable, and confident Recovery Coaches.


Through a partnership with the Alberta Government, this training is made available to individuals working or supporting in the field of recovery across the province of Alberta — ensuring that recovery support is accessible, ethical, and led by those who are ready to make a difference.

Step by Step Guide

Recovery Coach Training Journey

Before you can register for training, you must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check. This is a required part of our enrollment process to ensure safety and accountability in all training spaces.

  • ✅ You can request your Vulnerable Sector Check online by clicking the link below.
  • ✅ Or, you can visit your local police service in person and request a Vulnerable Sector Check. Be sure to bring government-issued ID and allow for processing time.
  • ✅ After submitting your request, whether online or in person, please send a copy of your full detailed proof of purchase to: training@rcacanada.ca
  • ✅ We do not need the completed check before training starts, but the process must be initiated and the receipt submitted before moving forward with registration.

The RCAC 30-hour Recovery Coach Training is your foundation. This intensive course is where you’ll build the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to support recovery in a participant-centred, ethical, and practical way.

This is a facilitated, 30-hour in person or online course. This training is a required first step before you can move forward with additional courses such as Ethics, Professionalism, Specialized Skills Training, Mentorship Programming, and the Panel Interview.

Important Notes:

✅ Full attendance (100%) is mandatory to meet Alberta Government funding requirements and to move forward in the Recovery Coach pathway.
✅ Be prepared to fully engage — this training asks for your attention, reflection, participation, and willingness to step into vulnerable, challenging conversations.
✅ You’ll leave this training with a stronger understanding of recovery, professional boundaries, participant-led support, and practical recovery coaching tools.

Your next step is completing the Ethical Considerations in Recovery Coaching course. This training challenges you to think critically about ethical decision-making, participant autonomy, and the complexities of supporting recovery in real-world settings.

This is a virtually facilitated, 16-hour online course. This course is essential preparation for mentorship programming and the final panel interview process.

Important Notes:

✅ Full attendance is required to receive your certificate of completion.
✅ Topics include ethical responsibilities, managing dual relationships, informed consent, confidentiality, participant rights, navigating role clarity, and the impact of bias and stigma in the helping relationship.
✅ You will leave this course better equipped to navigate ethical dilemmas with courage, thoughtfulness, and participant-centred care.
✅ Completion of this course is a required step in continuing through the Recovery Coach certification pathway.

⚡ This training is required before moving into mentorship programming, specialized skills development, and the panel interview process.

The next step is completing the Professionalism in Recovery Coaching course. This course deepens your understanding of professional conduct, ethical practices, and the lived experience of professionalism in recovery support work.

This is a virtually facilitated, 12-hour online course. This training is required before moving into mentorship programming, specialized skills development, and the panel interview process.

✅ Full attendance is required to receive your certificate of completion.
✅ This course will explore topics such as professional boundaries, dual relationships, social media conduct, confidentiality, and the role of lived experience in maintaining professionalism.
✅ You will leave this training with a clearer understanding of how to represent yourself, your organization, and the Recovery Coaching field with integrity, humility, and accountability.
✅ Completion of this course is mandatory to continue along the Recovery Coach pathway.

After completing your foundational courses, the next step is participating in Mentorship Programming.

This is a virtually facilitated, 20-hour online course. This training is required before moving into mentorship programming, specialized skills development, and the panel interview process. Mentorship is a key step in bridging the gap between learning and practice, preparing you for the final panel interview.

✅ Mentorship offers direct feedback from experienced Recovery Coaches and mentors who understand the complexities of supporting recovery.
✅ Sessions will focus on deepening your ethical decision-making, strengthening participant-centred support, and navigating the realities of recovery-oriented work.
✅ Mentorship is designed to be supportive, reflective, and practical — offering a space to build skills, ask questions, and strengthen your professional voice.
✅ Full participation in the mentorship programming is required to move forward in the Recovery Coach certification pathway.

Alongside your mentorship programming, you will complete Specialized Skills Training to further sharpen your abilities and expand your knowledge in key areas of Recovery Coaching.

⚡ Specialized Skills Courses are designed to equip you with advanced tools for participant support, ethical practice, and system navigation. These courses offer deeper dives into specific topics that strengthen your practice and help you better support a wide range of recovery journeys.

Important Notes:

✅ Topics vary but may include cultural humility, crisis intervention, motivational interviewing, advocacy strategies, compassionate interventions, and recovery capital development.
✅ You will select and complete the specialized skills courses that best fit your professional goals and the needs of the communities you serve.
✅ Each course builds on your foundational training, adding depth and flexibility to your Recovery Coaching practice.
✅ Completion of Specialized Skills Courses is required before proceeding to the panel interview.

The final step in your Recovery Coach journey is the Panel Interview. This is a formal assessment designed to evaluate your readiness to serve as a Recovery Coach.

⚡ The panel interview affirms your readiness to serve as a Recovery Coach with integrity, confidence, and care. You will be asked to demonstrate your understanding, reflect on your growth, and apply what you have learned throughout your training.

✅ The panel will include experienced Recovery Coaches and leaders who understand the work and the realities of supporting recovery.
✅ You will be asked to reflect on key concepts such as ethics, professionalism, boundaries, recovery-oriented support, and participant autonomy.
✅ The panel is a conversation, not a test — it’s designed to honour your journey, highlight your growth, and affirm your readiness.
✅ Successful completion of the panel interview finalizes your Recovery Coach training pathway and confirms your eligibility for certification.
